Wonderful Pastels! They can be bold and buttery, they’re highly pigmented, and they’re your very direct creative connection to the paper. Whether you’ve started your pastel journey or you’ve just been thinking about trying them, here’s a good chance to jump in. In this class, we’ll explore the many ways to create a sound and pleasing painting, step by step. So many options, so much to explore!!!
Come prepared to expand your ideas about the medium and grow your confidence in using them which, with practice, will soon translate to a much more enjoyable experience.

A painting is good, not because it looks like something, but rather because it FEELS like something. In this 2-day plein air workshop, Richard Jordan, former Director of the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan, will demonstrate his process for developing the poetry in painting. It’s not what you paint, but how you paint it that moves the needle from ordinary to something extra. He will give classroom and on-site demonstrations, working individually with each artist.
In this 2-day class Mary Ann will demonstrate and provide instruction in pastel. With instruction from IAPS Master Circle pastelist Mary Ann Pals, students will work from reference photos and learn how to choose harmonious colors to create a vibrant pastel painting.
Mary Ann will give demonstrations and will also provide individual help to students. This workshop is recommended for age 18+ advanced beginners and above.
**A few FREE sample Ludwig pastel sticks will be given to all students.

Using soft Pastels provide the most direct flow of pigment from human hand to paper of almost any medium. Skies set the mood for everything in a plein air painting. Sunny, cloudy, morning or evening. each casts it’s own unique light. Skies bathe the landscape in a full-range of values or limit them to a few. It also determines whether objects cast warm or cool shadows and have sharp or soft edges.
Trees are grand living things and we relate to them on an emotional level. As artists, we should feel something when we paint trees, yet often they are handled as props or filler. In this special workshop, Richard will demonstrate his approach to painting trees and how you can give them life and a believable presence in your work.

Most plein air artists are on a never ending quest to improve their skills. Reading books, attending classes and watching demonstrations can be very beneficial and inspiring. But often those valuable lessons become hazy or forgotten once we’re faced with an actual landscape. Unable to remember the lesson at hand, we retreat to what’s familiar and paint as we’ve always done in the past. Of course treading water gets us nowhere and the lesson is lost. In this special workshop, Richard Jordan, director of the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan, will slow down the plein air process and focus on the necessary steps for successful paintings. From the equipment you use, to the approach you choose, each element will be examined. We will seek to eliminate as many barriers and bad habits as possible, replacing them with good organization and effective techniques. Whether you’re new to plein air painting or an experienced artist, this workshop can help cut through the fog, and answer many of your plein air questions.

Richard Jordan is the founder and director of the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan. He has been painting exclusively en plein air for nearly two decades. In 2013, Richard began teaching plein air workshops in locations across Michigan.
